The tragic—and triumphant—story behind the STARCHASE® vehicular safety system.

Hugh Brydges is the inventor of a new device that will help eliminate high-speed police chases worldwide: it’s a hopeful, healthful idea, but one inspired by loss and pain.

“I lost a friend, and former business partner, Terry Timms, in a high-speed chase about ten years ago. She left three young children orphaned. They have been raised by her sister and have done extremely well in life — a real credit to her, to them and her entire family,” said Brydges. “But it was — and remains — such a sad and needless tragedy,” Brydges recounted.

The product idea may have sprung from an immediate flash of inspiration – but realizing and refining it took a full decade of patience and perspiration. “While I conceived the need and general working principles of StarChase the day after Terry was killed, it took more than 10 years to get the necessary technology aligned to begin the engineering and manufacturing of the product,” he added.

And the result?

An exciting new device created expressly for state and local police departments the FBI, CIA, ATF, Customs, Border Patrol, Homeland Security and the US Military, called StarChase. It was unveiled in February 2006 in Los Angeles — the site of more high-speed, high-profile car chases than any other city in the United States.

The LAPD held a press conference as part of the product introduction, and the device was met with great enthusiasm from management, administration, city risk managers, and, of course, the thousands of beat officers whose lives are on the line every day — and not infrequently by the real risks and dangers of high-speed chases.

StarChase is a relatively simple — but profoundly important — invention. It will save both officers and civilians from becoming traffic fatalities. It is the most effective weapon to date in eliminating the carnage on the highways caused by high-speed pursuit.

While the price of death and debilitation can never be calculated, it is of note that in 2008 alone, (the last year for which these numbers have been tabulated), the personal and property damages exceeded eight billion dollars.

Worldwide marketing and sales of the StarChase system will begin in 2010, following first-tier sales to police departments in the United States and Canada. Nationally, a number of leading metro area police departments have been expressing considerable interest.

StarChase has also attracted and marshaled the talents and experience of some of the top engineers and visionaries in the country.
